2013 Prince George of Cambridge

On the 11th September, 2013, New Zealand Post is going to issue a set of four stamps and a special coin to mark the birth of the royal baby, His Royal Highness - Prince George of Cambridge. Born on 22 July, 2013, to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George is third in line to the throne and will one day become ‘King of New Zealand.’

When I was thinking about how I could present this set I decided it might be nice to also show those who were in the line of the throne before him. So I have included the baby photos of both Prince William and Prince Charles. At the bottom is the 1940 British Sovereigns stamp which takes the line all the way back to Queen Victoria. But first lets see the stamps and coin of Prince George.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge with Prince George.

I am impressed with these four stamps. They are a clear, uncluttered design which feature the photographs well. Yes I know the photos are the same we saw that day when his parents brought him out before the media in front of the hospital, but they look good on the stamps.
Probably the one I like the less is the first value (70c) as it is rather unflattering of Kate. This is made up for in the second value ($2,40) which is a nice picture of the couple with their baby. Then we see a view of William holding his child in the next value ($1.90). But for me the best photo is on the last value ($2.90), the photo of Kate holding her baby. Her expression is slightly cheeky, slightly embarrassed and reminds me of when she kissed William on her wedding day on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
Below is the First day cover which shows the picture from the 70c stamp in a different format. Notice the cancel strike which shows the words "Royal Baby" under a royal crown.

As for the coin below. I'm not really into coins but certainly not this one. I suppose it is rather hard to design a coin since only the Queen is allowed to be displayed.

Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, The Prince of Wales,  was born on 14 November 1948, being the eldest son of the then Princess Elizabeth (now Queen Elizabeth II) and Prince Philip, and is heir to the throne of the United Kingdom.

Princess Elizabeth.

In 1943 NZ Post issued this triangular stamp of Princess Elizabeth as part of their Health Stamp series. There was a second value of her sister Margaret as well.

Since the 1943 Princesses had been so popular they were again seen in 1944 but this time together on each value. Princess Elizabeth, on the right, was shown in the uniform of the Sea Rangers and Princess Margaret in the uniform of the Girl Guides.

Queen Victoria to King George VI.

1940 Centennial - British Sovereigns
The design is very interesting in that it also shows four other royal heads of state. In the top left corner is Queen Victoria. In the top right side is her son King Edward VII. In the lower left is Edward's son King George V. George V had two sons, King Edward VIII in the bottom right corner and of course King George VI in the centre. On the left is the flag of Britain and on the right the flag of New Zealand.
