1969 Anniversaries.

This post looks at four anniversary issues from 1969 which we have placed together on one page. Anniversary stamp issues are some times overlooked by collectors, even though they are often colourful, well designed stamps. They usually have an interesting story behind them as well. Included in this group is an historical event, a university, a New Zealand aid organisation and an international labour organisation.

There were actually two other issues, 1969 Captain Cook Bicentenary and the 1969 New Zealand Law Society Centenary which have been featured in other posts.

1969 - International Labour Organisation
50th Anniversary.
The International Labour Organisation which was founded under the auspices of the United Nations in Geneva in 1919 asked through the Universal Postal Union for member countries to issue a stamp to commemorate their 50th anniversary. The New Zealand Post Office agreed to issue such a stamp, and at the request of the ILO the background of the stamp was made a garnet-red and the denomination matched to that of a principal overseas postage rate.

7c - International Labour Organisation.
We have two examples of First Day Covers for this issue. The top cover shows a design centered around a globe with explanations concerning the founding of this organisation.
The lower cover shows International Labour Organisation logo, similar to that used in the stamp's design.

1969 - Otago University Centenary.
On 3 June 1869 an Ordinance of the Provincial Council was passed establishing the University of Otago and giving it the power to grant degrees in Arts, Medicine, Law and Music. This was a milestone in the history of education in New Zealand as it was the first university to be established in the young country. Today (2015) The Otago University is still famous as a good place to study medicine.

3c - University of Otago Building.                                          10c - Graduation / Capping Ceremony.

Above is a First Day Cover using the standard all issue FDC design.

Now this parcel label is a problem. It appears to have been dated 8th April, 1969 and according to the writing on the card, was received on the 10th April, 1969. The problem with this is that this particular stamp wasn't issued until the 3rd June, 1969. All I can think is that for some reason this parcel didn't get sent until June even though it was said to have been posted nearly 2 months earlier or the stamp as been added at some later date. The position of the stamp also seems a bit strange to as it covers the card heading when there is space left for a postage stamp in the top right-hand corner.

These two stamps appear to show colour shifts of various colours but I believe that the problem might lay with the black frame colour rather than the other colours.

1969 - 150th Anniversary of First European
Settlement - Bay of Islands.
On 18 August 1819 the Reverend Samuel Marsden made his first landing in New Zealand at Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands and, with the agreement of the local Maori Chief Hongi Heke, marked out land for the erection of the first mission buildings. This stamp issue commemorated early European settlement in New Zealand and coincided with the celebrations held to mark the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Kerikeri, the oldest European settlement in New Zealand still in existence.

4c - Oldest House and Stone Store - Kerikeri.                                    6c - Bay of Islands - Harbour.

One stamp features a scene of the Bay of Islands and the other a scene of Kerikeri depicting the oldest existing house in New Zealand, built in 1819, and the old stone Mission Store built in 1833.  The photograph on the 4c stamp was supplied by Mr Hardcastle, Chairman, Kerikeri 150th Anniversary Organisation. The photograph illustrated on the 6c stamp was supplied by the Illustrations Editor, New Zealand Weekly News.

First Day Covers.
Below are three different First Day Covers for this issue.
This cover stands out as being different in that it shows the cross set to mark the spot where Kerikeri was established. Notice the European and Maori spades arranged in a second cross over the design.

These two covers make a pair in that they both show one of the two buildings found on the 4c value. Above is the Kemp House of  1819 and below is the Stone Store of 1833.

1969 - CORSO - 25th Anniversary.
These stamps were issued to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of CORSO
(Council of Organisations for Relief Services Overseas). CORSO is a New Zealand aid organisation.

7c - CORSO Wheat Theme.                                            8c - CORSO Milk Theme.

One of the two stamps depicted a child holding a food bowl as she stands in a wheat field, and the other a woman giving her child a glass of milk whilst cattle graze in the background.

This blog usually shows mint stamps, stamps as they are sold by the Post Office unused. But there are many collectors who believe used stamps should be collected. We've all had used stamps, as children ripping the corners of envelopes and soaking the stamps off. Some collectors also collect used stamps for their post marks too. You can view a small collection of these postal cancelation on the 1900 1½d Boer War stamp. Postal Cancelations.
But with the three stamps above I wanted to show three used stamps where the cancelations do not in anyway distract from the beauty of their design.

Two First Day Covers - top one above being especially designed for this issue while the lower cover is a generic all issues cover.
