Each year New Zealand Post produces 'The New Zealand Collection' - a comprehensive album of all the stamps produced in in the past year. This premium publication features stunning pictorial images and extensive commentary on the year's stamp issues from some of New Zealand’s most well known personalities.

I know it will turn into a free advert for NZ Post but I hope that over time this post will become more of the historic page. Antarctica Post - Page Two

        Antarctica Post has issued a new stamp each year since 2002. These stamps are designed and issued with the help of New Zealand Wine Post. Their stamps secure special delivery between the USA bases, South Pole Station or McMurdo Station to Antarctica Post Agency in Dunedin. Once the letter reaches New Zealand it is forwarded using other postal services.

         As well as providing a postal service they also have an eye for the collector market as well. They offer a service where for $10.00 they will provide a letter or postcard cancelled at the South Pole and sent to you via New Zealand. Examples of these can be seen on this page.

         There will be some small, poor quality stamps in this collection until we can find better replacements. We considered it was better to present a complete collection rather than go for a part collection of good quality stamps. Like we did with our NZ Wine Post collection, this post will be published partly finished with further work continuing after that. For updates see our 'What is New in this Blog.'

Personalised Stamps

          Personalised Stamps have been issued in a number of formats since 2001. The basic idea is that you add your own photograph or logo to the one provided by NZ Post. Your personal stamps are then created and sent to you. While there is an extra cost involved you do get a postage stamp the is uniquely you.
          In this post, we intend to show you each issue listed by year on the one page. There is not much description needed and in many cases, the same design appears a number of times with different values. In some cases, the same stamp has appeared twice in the same issue with different values too. While this may not turn out to be the most popular post on this blog we all thought these issues need to be covered as they are genuine stamps able to be used for postage by their purchaser.
          Before Personalised Stamps, there was a series of four issues known as Greeting Stamps. These began in 1988 and went through until Personalised Stamps began in 2001. The first two issues of Personalised Stamps from 2001 and 2005 could also be considered as Greeting Stamps two so we have included them here and in our Greeting Stamp collection.

New Zealand Wine Post. (Stampmetro) 

         This is the third part of our New Zealand Wine Post collection, taking us through the third 10 years. This collection is incomplete and needs a lot more work in some areas but we've decided to open it for viewing as we continue adding new items and completing further sections.

         The Wine Post, also known as New Zealand Wine Post, is a privately owned postal service in New Zealand. It is operated by Weston Winery New Zealand, which is the World's Most Southern Winery and acts as its only post office. The Wine Post began issuing its own postage in 1990. It is one of the many independent posts of New Zealand which has a deregulated postal environment. The Wine Post stamps are for their domestic and international postage for their own winery.

2014 Baypex National Stamp Show.



This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Hastings Stamp Collectors Club and the 80th anniversary of the Hawke’s Bay Philatelic Society. To mark these significant anniversaries, a National Stamp Show is being held in the Hawke’s Bay.

          Baypex 2014 took place from 14 to 16 November 2014 at the Pettigrew Green Arena in Taradale, Napier. Hawke’s Bay is home to the twin cities of Hastings and Napier, known for their fine wine, Art Deco architecture and stunning weather.

         To commemorate Baypex 2014, New Zealand Post is issuing an exhibition miniature sheet and exhibition souvenir cover. The unique collectables show the iconic Soundshell from the Marine Parade in Napier. These special collectables incorporate three stamps from the For King & Empire stamp issue into the miniature sheet.
        Each day of the exhibition a different postmark, designed by Alan Hollows of New Zealand Post, was used on items posted at the exhibition. Below are proofs of the three cancels for the dates 14th through 16th of November, 2014.

2014 Ross Dependency - Penguins of Antarctica.

       
       Antarctica is a cold remote place few people other than scientists get to visit. But with many people there is a fasciation with animals and scenery from this continuant. That is why each year the annual Ross Dependency issue is so well received by stamp collectors.   

         Penguins are the most commonly found birds in Antarctica, and the Ross Dependency 2014 stamp issue features five unique breeds of penguin that choose to call this cold, dry continent home. The stamps are unusual in that they round instead of the usual rectangle shape.

         Truly flightless birds, penguins have evolved traits that make them perfect for icy conditions such as those of Antarctica. While many different colonies of penguins live in Antarctica, the majority of the world’s penguins prefer to inhabit other cooler waters in the Southern Hemisphere. A layer of fat under their feathers keeps them warm and a white belly acts as a camouflage keeping them safe from predators when swimming under ice.

          'The Hobbit: The Battle Of Five Armies' brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. To commemorate the final film in this thrilling trilogy, New Zealand Post has created official stamps and legal tender coins from Middle-earth.
         The writers of this blog first considered waiting until we had seen the movie before publishing a post on it but recently we decided to release this simple view of the stamps with further details and items being added later.

2014 - The Hobbit Personalised Stamps

        New Zealand Post wrote on their web site, "Join the mighty race of Dwarves with a brand new range of personalised stamps made especially for the final film in Sir Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy – The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies."

         For Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit fans this is another interesting and unusual stamp issue. It was released on the 15th October and consists of two parts. First is the collectors part which features a miniature sheet and its First Day Cover. Included on this sheet are the two stamp which can be seen to the right. Since these two stamps will be only sold in miniature sheets it is not expected that many will be used for postage.

        The second part is where a person can up-load their photo and make personal stamps for their own use. The idea here is that a person selects the dwarf of their choice whose hair and other features will be applied to their own photo. (See the pictures further down this post.)  The photo is then used to create a personalised stamp that is purchased in a sheet of 20 for $25.90.  

2014 Christmas Issue.

For many children across New Zealand, performing in a nativity play is a festive tradition. This stamp issue Christmas 2014 show five main characters of the Christmas story in the form of children actors. The first year I was in New Zealand I got to play a Japanese angel. LOL I've attended plays where my little brother was involved. Its always a lot of fun.

2014 For King and Empire - 1914

World War I Commemorative Book Series.

Forward to 2015 The Spirit of ANZAC - 1915.

          "100 years ago, the shape of New Zealand began to change forever, as we followed King and Empire to serve in the First World War. What was meant to be a ‘great adventure’, soon affected every New Zealander at home and abroad, with 18,500 New Zealanders never to return. To commemorate this important centenary and honour those who served, New Zealand Post is issuing official stamps and legal tender commemorative coins."
         That was the opening statement for this issue from the NZ Post website. This is the beginning of a complex series of issues spread over five years. I am unsure how these five sets will fit together so this post might be changed or replaced at some point as I learn more.
         The main feature of this issue is a presentation book containing 10 special pages/sheets. The Melville Mirfin story is honoured in this special commemorative book, featuring never-before-seen imagery of the Great War through Mirfin’s eyes. Melville was a soldier who went to fight in the war. A photo of Melville in uniform can be seen on the 80c stamp to the left.

2014 All blacks

         Representing us in our national sport, the All Blacks are a point of pride for most New Zealanders. Show your support to the All Blacks with these special stamps re-issued to reflect the upcoming changes to domestic postage rates (effective 1 July 2014).  From NZ Post web site.
         Allan came up to visit our farm over the weekend and we sat down to discuss the direction of this blog. One of the things decided was to feature all new issues. So in light of this I have decided to show this set and link it to other rugby stamps produced by New Zealand.

 

2014 Endangered Seabirds.

New Zealand’s unique marine environment is home to a diverse range of seabirds, giving New Zealand the title of ‘seabird capital of the world’. That was a title from the NZ Post web site, personally I've never heard it before. Five of our most endangered seabirds are featured on this unique stamp issue that uses thermo chromic ink to reflect the disappearing nature of these precious birds.

Putting aside the rather gimmicky use of the thermo chromic disappearing birds, these stamps are nice to look at. Good pictures, a larger format and the part word 'dangered' in red. What lets them down is the other information/writing in the stamps are at times hard to see because of similar coloured backgrounds.

Teaching children to grow their own fruits and vegetables not only benefits their health and well-being, it gives them positive attitudes towards healthy foods as well as a sense of pride and accomplishment. The 2014 Children’s Health stamp issue celebrates these foods that fuel the New Zealanders of tomorrow.

The 2014 Health Issue is special in that it marks the 85th year since Health Stamps were first issued. The series has come a long way and changed a lot since then. Health Stamps have contributed greatly to children's health over the years and continues to do so with every stamp sold this year providing 10c for Health.

2014 Legendary Landmarks.

          When I discovered that Allan had missed this 2014 stamp issue from early July, I asked him why. He said he had not intention of putting it on this blog as it 'wasn't a real stamp issue.' This issue came out as a sheet rather than as single stamps so Allan thinks it is aimed at collectors and not many will end up on common letters, therefore he does not consider it a postage stamp. I said "I'll do it." He replied, "Be my guest." So here it is.      
          Many towns and cities throughout this country have their special unique icons that reflect their character. The NZ Post Legendary Landmarks stamp issue takes a look at just 18 of these. From the well-known landmarks like the Lemon & Paeroa bottle and the Ohakune carrot, to the lesser-known Mossburn deer and the truly kiwi Taihape gumboot, these landmarks can tell you about the local history and the town’s identity without saying a word.

2014 Personalised Stamps.

        This one of a series issues that began in 2001 with new issues, new values, appearing regularly. For an over view of all of these issued see our thematic collection Personalised Stamps.

        In May 2014 New Zealand Post issued a new range of Personalised Stamps to meet changes in postal rates. The stamps feature a picture provided by the purchaser combined with a design from NZ Post to create a Personalised Stamp. Using a simple three step process, they can be ordered to your requirements and delivered quickly. A sheet of 20 stamps will cost you $23.90. They can be ordered via the NZ Post Web Site http://stamps.nzpost.co.nz/

          NZ Post describes these:-
          This vibrant range of Personalised Stamps has been issued to reflect the upcoming changes to postage rates. It allows you to give your mail that special touch by featuring your favourite photo or image alongside one of the gorgeous stamp designs.

Wildlife - Game Bird Habitat.

         The New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Trust, established under the 1953 Wildlife Act, exists primarily to improve New Zealand game bird habitat, and secondarily to improve the habitat for other wildlife. The key purpose of the Game Bird Habitat Trust Board is to distribute funding for the development and enhancement of wetland habitat for the benefit of game birds and other wetland inhabitants.

         The New Zealand Fish and Game Council commenced issuing $10 license stamps in 1994.  The stamp is affixed to the game bird hunter's license thus validating the license for the current year. $2 of the license fee goes towards establishment and protection of Game Bird Habitats. The stamps and related products such as miniature sheets and First Day Covers are also marketed by NZ Post with funding received going back to the Habitat Trust.

          I first saw these stamps on the NZ Post website a few months ago. A web search revealed a few extra years to the ones offered by NZ Post. Since it seemed an impossible exercise to find all of these stamps, or for that matter even establish how many years they had been issued, I dropped the project in favour of many others I could complete. Yesterday I found them all except the year 2011 which I just happened to have already so now I am able to feature them in a post on this blog. 

          The date shown under each stamp relates to the year of issue of the stamp, not the year the license expires as shown on the stamp itself.

2014 Matariki - Papatūānuku and Ranginui.



The Rising of Matariki.        

        For the Māori people, the night skies in June traditionally has huge significance as the dawn of a new Māori year. The annual appearance of the seven stars of ‘Matariki’, also known as the star cluster 'The Pleiades' in the constellation Tauris, or by its common name 'the seven sisters', signals a time for renewal, reflection and celebration! This celebration is something unique to New Zealand.

        Each year New Zealand Post  issues a set of postage stamps to mark this event. These stamps always feature some aspect of Maori culture. The 2014 Matariki issue was about the well known story of Papatūānuku and Ranginui. The set of six stamps show how six famous artists used this story to inspire their art.

2014 Scenic Definitives

      May 7th, 2014 saw the release of a set of five definitive stamps to meet planned changes in postal rates. Three of these stamps were produced using the normal gummed format while another two were produced as adhesive stamps. One of these adhesive stamps was also produced in a gummed version as part of a special miniature sheet. Sound confusing? I will explain this further when we begin looking at the individual stamps.

        There have been a lot of these scenic definitives over the years and many have turned out to be terrible looking stamps. The small format of a postage stamp does not show a lot of detail so what I think makes a good scenic stamp is to capture an interesting foreground combined with a not too crowded distant scene. Some of the stamps below achieve this very well while others don't.

         For me the best was $2.00 - Mount Taranaki, with the cows grazing in the foreground and the mountain behind, this makes a great scene of typical New Zealand. $1.60 - Moeraki Boulders is good too as it captures these unusual boulders. On the other hand I believe the $2.50 - Pancake Rocks do not show us the full effect of this amazing place.

2014 ANZAC WWII Poster Art.

         2014 is the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II. – a war in which nearly 200,000 men and 10,000 women served for New Zealand both overseas and at home and nearly one in every 150 New Zealanders lost their lives. It was a big effort for such a small country, that like of which has never been seen before or since.
         World War II was a war that engulfed the globe, with fighting seen in many countries and parts of the would. The conflict was fought on land, in the air and across the oceans. 50 million people lost their lives, millions more were effected by losing loved ones and with many more becoming displaced and homeless as the fighting raged across their towns, cities and countries.
        The 2014 Anzac stamps depict six war effort WWII posters produced during the war.  Between 1939 and 1945 New Zealand produced hundreds of thousands of posters, window stickers and cards in support of its involvement in World War II. The purpose of these posters was to raise funds, recruit New Zealanders and give advice and information about the war. They helped to create a war-like atmosphere at home and keep people focused on the war effort.

2014 Royal Visit.



          For the first time the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge go on an official Royal Tour as a married couple. They will be accompanied by their young son Prince George. Part of their time on tour will be spent in various parts of New Zealand.
         Prince William will be acting on behalf of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, as her representative so New Zealand will consider him in the same official capacity as they would the Queen. It will be Catherine's first visit to this country.

        To mark this important royal event, NZ Post will be issuing two values on the 7th of April. This issue will also include a First Day Cover a special cancel strike.
