These stamps were shown on two websites and in both cases, the information was lacking and images of very poor quality. While we would rather not include images like these I think the stamps are of interest.

Why a collection of wine labels on a blog about postage stamps?

            Weston's Winery is a small winery located close to Dunedin in New Zealand's South Island. They were among the first to establish their own postal service when New Zealand deregulated the postal environment which opened the way for many small local posts to be established.

            The first New Zealand Wine Post (WinePost) stamps appeared in late 1990 and have continued to the present day. Along the way, many fine stamps have been issued. You will have found my series of posts on New Zealand Wine Post, well now I want to add one more page.

             This page goes back to the very early Weston's Winery labels and follows them through to when the WinePost started designing stamps. Those who have taken the time to study these stamps will notice similar themes and designs here. There is a progression from the earliest wine labels right through to the latest stamps. I believe this page gives my WinePost pages some history, perhaps you might say pre-history. Where there is a very obvious connection between a Weston's Wine Label and a Winepost stamp, the stamps have been included here for comparison.

      When Mary finished her three large pages of stamps from the local postal agency New Zealand Wine Post there was some tidy up work needed to be done so the collection would be a lot easier to navigate around. I began putting in these links and added that small Index at the top of each page. Now I am listing each issue in our main Index pages too.
        Mary said that it might be of interest doing a thematic collection on the official stamps used for communication with the New Zealand Government. Since I also do many of the thematic collections for this blog I agreed to do this one as well. My intention here is to display these six stamps and four trials together so they can be enjoyed and compared. Most of the information found here has come from Mary's pages.

1915 General Grant Salvage Expedition Stamps.

                              

       A Set of two values issued for the Catling Expedition of 1915/16 to salvage the gold and cargo of the General Grant which had struck the cliffs of the Auckland Islands many years before. These stamps are a very sought after collector's items and can fetch high prices on the rare occasions when they come up for sale. (As of Mar 2016, the two stamps above would be worth approx. $140.00 NZ each)

         The Wine Post, also known as New Zealand Wine Post, is a privately owned postal service in New Zealand. It is operated by Westons Winery New Zealand, which is the World's Most Southern Winery and acts as its only post office. Wine Post began issuing its own postage stamps in 1990 as one of the many independent posts of New Zealand, operating in a deregulated postal environment. The Wine Post stamps are used for the domestic and international postage requirements of their own winery.
         The Wine Post is what is called a local post, and is completely independent of the State mail carrier. It has its own stamps, postmarks and system of delivery within New Zealand and abroad. The cost of the postage is somewhat higher than 80 cents for a letter offered by NZ Post the state carrier.

New Zealand Express - Revenue Stamps.

 
      New Zealand Express was a company created to be an express forwarder of parcels, both throughout New Zealand and overseas. Set up in 1877 under the name Campbell and Crust, in 1895 it changed its name to New Zealand Express. The company seems to have had a good working relationship with New Zealand Railways which apparently included special drop boxes on certain trains, and parcel transfer arrangements.

        This set of five value stamps appeared sometime in the last few years before the turn of the century. They were used in much the same way as similar NZ Railways revenue stamps, to show payment had been made on items being transported. The stamps ranged in value from ½d to 6d. Later another 1/- appeared in a different design and larger format.

Wildlife - Game Bird Habitat.

         The New Zealand Game Bird Habitat Trust, established under the 1953 Wildlife Act, exists primarily to improve New Zealand game bird habitat, and secondarily to improve the habitat for other wildlife. The key purpose of the Game Bird Habitat Trust Board is to distribute funding for the development and enhancement of wetland habitat for the benefit of game birds and other wetland inhabitants.

         The New Zealand Fish and Game Council commenced issuing $10 license stamps in 1994.  The stamp is affixed to the game bird hunter's license thus validating the license for the current year. $2 of the license fee goes towards establishment and protection of Game Bird Habitats. The stamps and related products such as miniature sheets and First Day Covers are also marketed by NZ Post with funding received going back to the Habitat Trust.

          I first saw these stamps on the NZ Post website a few months ago. A web search revealed a few extra years to the ones offered by NZ Post. Since it seemed an impossible exercise to find all of these stamps, or for that matter even establish how many years they had been issued, I dropped the project in favour of many others I could complete. Yesterday I found them all except the year 2011 which I just happened to have already so now I am able to feature them in a post on this blog. 

          The date shown under each stamp relates to the year of issue of the stamp, not the year the license expires as shown on the stamp itself.

Great Barrier Pigeon Post.

        Great Barrier Island is the largest island in the Hauraki Gulf, laying only 65 miles (105Km) from Auckland City. The island can be seen from Auckland on a clear day, it is that close, but back in the 1800s, it was isolated with no communication other than by sea with an irregular ship service. When in 1894, the Northern Steamship Company's ship SS Wairarapa hit the northern end of the island with the loss of 121 lives, the news took several days to reach Auckland. It highlighted the need for better communication between the island and the mainland. See our post Wreck of the Wairarapa.

       The Great Barrier Pigeongram Agency was created in early 1897 with a purpose of providing a mail service using pigeons. The letters carried, known as flimsies, were written on extremely lightweight paper. A few months later, on 14th May 1897, a rival pigeon mail service was established under the name of The Original Great Barrier Pigeongram Service. The two companies, commonly known as the 'Agency' and the 'Service', competed with each other until 1908 when a telephone cable was laid between the island and the mainland.
