Counterpart, Denoting, Fine Paid, Mortgagee's Indemnity and Not Liable stamps

New Zealand fiscal and postage stamps were overprinted for various revenue purposes. Some are given below. Counterpart Counterpart stamps were attached to duplicate (i.e. counterpart) documents provided that the full stamp duty had been paid on the original. The counterpart fee was 2s 6d. The first issue was in 1870 and the design was Die I of the 1867 Revenue issue. The stamp on the left is Die II and was issued in 1880. In 1887, stamps were issued in the design of the revenue stamps of 1880, but with the word Counterpart in rather small letters above the value as in the example on the below. In 1916 the fee was increased to 3s 0d and ordinary revenue stamps were overprinted diagonally in black although special printings were made as the colour was always yellow. It exists both perf 14 and perf 14½x14. In 1927, the George V 3s 0d Admiral stamp was printed on Cowan paper, perf 14, in orange yellow and overprin

Personal Message & Greeting Stamps.

Sometime ago Anne did a post on Personalised Stamps. These seemed to have appeared in 2001 and continued on until today. Well recently we found another series of stamps that are close cousins to the Personalised Stamps, these are the Greeting Stamps. There appears to have been four of these issues with another two that appear to be a cross between Greeting and Personalised Stamps.

This post is intended to cover the first four Greeting Stamp issues and I've also included the other two cross issues that are also found in our Personalised Stamps collection, (See link above.)

Greeting stamps were usually issued in booklets so could be included in a booklet collection. Their purpose was to provide stamps for special purpose greeting cards and letters. The idea being that when you sent a birthday card you could use a stamp saying 'Happy Birthday' too.

1988 Personal Message.

This booklet stamp issue consisted of five stamps carrying special occasion personal messages. All five stamps carried the value of 40c but each carried a different greeting.
A writing quill to illustrate "keeping in touch"',
Hands to say "congratulations ",
A flower to wish "good luck",
A cake and candles to say "Happy Birthday".
A bandaged figure in bed to illustrate "get well soon".

The booklet cover. In this case overprinted for the World Stamp Expo '89.

The First Day Cover.

The 1991 Greeting Issues.
1991 40c - Happy Birthday.
New Zealanders are keen senders of greetings cards. In fact, every day (back in 1991) thousands of birthday and greeting cards pass through postal sorters' hands on their way to friends and loved ones throughout New Zealand and other parts of the world. This stamp issue was designed with the message 'Happy Birthday' to add a special touch to birthday mail. The colourful, attractive designs feature the customs which most strongly symbolise birthdays to us and most of the western world - gifts, party hats, balloons and birthday cake.

40c - Clown.                             40c - Balloons.                             40c - Party Hat.
40c - Present.                                                         40c - Candles.

1991 - 40c Thinking of You.
Rather than producing a specific personal message stamp for every special occasion, New Zealand Post briefed a team of student designers to create stamp designs which would be appropriate for almost any occasion. The sentiment which seemed most fitting was 'Thinking of You'. The series of designs developed was both light-hearted and appealing.

   40c - Hope / Window Sill.           40c - Memories / Slippers.            40c - Patience / Clock.
40c - Forlorn / Raining Window.                   40c - Anticipation / Door.

The sets of stamps were produced in booklets containing five 40c stamps. Due to a change in the postage rate, the booklets were reissued on 1 July 1991 with five 45 cent stamps.

1998 Greeting Stamps.
The need to stay in touch with our family and those we care for is a fundamental part of our humanity and our civilisation. But what we communicate, and how we choose to do so, very much reflect the influences of personality, culture and situation. As our lives continue to become faster in an ever-changing world the need to 'stay in touch' becomes even more important. We need to maintain relationships and forge bonds with those close to us.
A handful of the more traditional methods of greeting and staying in contact with other members of humanity is captured in this issue of ten 40c stamps. The hongi, the kiss, the high five and others in this issue reflect the diversity of ways New Zealanders choose to convey their emotions to one another. Even the stamps in this issue symbolise staying in touch.
