          During the late 80s and early 90s, there were three of the Heritage series produced by New Zealand Post. This page gives a brief look, an overview of the issues comprising the first series, issued during the period 1988 - 1990.  These six issues are part of the 'Heritage' series leading up to the 1990 150th anniversary celebrations in New Zealand. The year 1990 marked 150 years since sovereignty was vested in the English crown.

1988 Heritage Set 1 - The Land.
This issue titled 'The Land' was the first of a 'Heritage ' series of stamps leading up to the 1990 150th anniversary celebrations in New Zealand. This issue 'The Land' - consisted of a set of six stamps featuring reproductions of early New Zealand paintings completed by some of the country's most famous 19th-century artists. These artists interpreted the crystal clear light and rugged scenery in a romanticized European fashion.  Their paintings were often sent to England as the first record of the new found frontier - persuading many settlers to emigrate.

1989 Heritage Set 2 - The People.
This issue titled 'The People' was the second in the 'Heritage' series leading up to the 1990 150th anniversary celebrations in New Zealand. The main theme of these six stamps is the people who made their mark on the history of New Zealand.

1989 Heritage Set 3 - The Sea.
This issue titled 'The Sea' was another in the 'Heritage ' series leading up to the 1990 150th anniversary celebrations in New Zealand. The sea has played and continues to play, a significant part of our island life.

1990 Heritage Set 4 - The Ships.
This issue titled "The Ships" was another in the 'Heritage ' stamp series leading up to the 1990 150th anniversary celebrations in New Zealand. This is not a set of just any ships, these ships played important roles in bringing settlers to New Zealand from various parts of the world.

1990 Heritage Set 5 - The Achievers.
This issue titled "The Achievers" was another in the 'Heritage ' series of stamps leading up to the 1990 150th anniversary celebrations in New Zealand. New Zealand is known for its achievers, people who stand out and do something different. This set has six of these, three women and three men, all of whom made important contributions to our society.

60c - Katherine Sheppard / First Country with Women's Suffrage.
80c - Richard Pearse / Inventor First Successful Flying Machine.

1990 Heritage Set 6 - The Maori.
The Tangata Whenua / Maori People.
This sixth and final issue in the 'Heritage ' series of stamps, commemorating New Zealand's 150th anniversary in 1990, honours the Tangata Whenua - the original people of the land. Finally, we have the Maori people whose culture added much to the culture of New Zealand.

1990 - Treaty of Waitangi 150th Anniversary.
These six issues were all leading up to the celebrations in 1990 of 150 since the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, the founding document of the nation of New Zealand. This event was marked by NZ Post with the issue of this miniature sheet.
