Counterpart, Denoting, Fine Paid, Mortgagee's Indemnity and Not Liable stamps

New Zealand fiscal and postage stamps were overprinted for various revenue purposes. Some are given below. Counterpart Counterpart stamps were attached to duplicate (i.e. counterpart) documents provided that the full stamp duty had been paid on the original. The counterpart fee was 2s 6d. The first issue was in 1870 and the design was Die I of the 1867 Revenue issue. The stamp on the left is Die II and was issued in 1880. In 1887, stamps were issued in the design of the revenue stamps of 1880, but with the word Counterpart in rather small letters above the value as in the example on the below. In 1916 the fee was increased to 3s 0d and ordinary revenue stamps were overprinted diagonally in black although special printings were made as the colour was always yellow. It exists both perf 14 and perf 14½x14. In 1927, the George V 3s 0d Admiral stamp was printed on Cowan paper, perf 14, in orange yellow and overprin

2018 Armistice 1918 - 2018.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the guns fell silent along the Western Front. The First World War had effectively ended. To commemorate this important centenary and honour those who served, a series of official stamps and legal tender commemorative coins have been issued.
These were good stamps and I believe that it is a good idea to remember the end of World War I in this way. The design almost has a formal appearance, very much in keeping with stamps of the early 1900s. But I think something should have been added regarding the subject of each stamp, eg Airforce, Navy, Army etc.

The Stamps.
$1.20 - Air Force.
New Zealand contributed to the First World War in the air by training hundreds of pilot for service in British squadrons. The Royal New Zealand Air Force was established in 1937 just before the Second World War. In 2018 its 2,500 regulars and several hundred reservists mainly performed surveillance and emergency relief roles, flying NH90 and Super Seasprite helicopters and long-distance Orion and cargo-carrying Hercules aircraft.

$1.20 - Medical Services.
More than half of New Zealand's 700 registered doctors and 550 nurses from the New Zealand Army Nursing Service served in the Medical Corps during the First World War. By 1918, advances in treatment had significantly improved injured men's chances of survival.

$2.40 - Army.
The vast majority of Kiwis who served overseas during the First World War were in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The New Zealand Army was formally established in 1950. It now makes up more than half of the New Zealand Defence Force with 4,500 regulars and 1,600 reservists.

$3.00 - Navy.
During the First World War, Royal Navy cruisers stationed in New Zealand waters in peacetime were sent to the Mediterranean. The Royal New Zealand Navy was established in 1941. In 2018, its 2,500 personnel and 10 ships patrol New Zealand's huge Exclusive Economic Zone and provide emergency relief at home and overseas.

$3.60 - Poppy.
Since the publication of "In Flanders Fields" red poppies have evoked memories of wartime loss and are used around the world as official symbols of remembrance. In New Zealand, poppies are worn on ANZAC Day rather than Armistice Day.

  1. Is this a part of that recent series NZ Post has been featuring on World War I?

  2. No Andrew. This issue does not appear to be related to that earlier series. They were set around a book sold with each issue while this issue is connected to the sale of coins. We are going to link them together in this blog because they are all related to World War I.

  3. I like these stamps. Got a very traditional look about them, sort of a bit like the 1920 Victory issue.

    1. Yes Amanda, I like them too but I'm not sure that Mary and Allan like them. I went back and looked at the 1920 Victory issue and they do look a bit similar. A lot closer than the recent World War I series.
