Revenue Use of Postage Stamps Around 1900.

During our research for this current series of posts on the stamps from 1873 to 1907 we came across a number of items on which stamps had been used for revenue purposes. These have been displayed in the various posts but we have decided to put them all together here so they can be compared on one page.

First off a bit of background. In 1880 it was decided to combine the payment of postage and 'revenue' - such as government fees and import duties into a single set of stamps. All previous issues of stamps had only been usable for postage purposes or for revenue purposes. Apart from the 'Postage and Revenue' inscription, most of the second sideface stamps were modified designs from the 1874 issue stamps they replaced and are very similar. The key to telling these two issues form one another is the 1874 series carries the word "Postage" while the 1882 series carries the words "Postage & Revenue."
This opened the way for a very diverse range of documents to have 'postage' stamps attached, as can be seen in the items below. Mainly they relate to the transfer of larger amounts of money without using the money itself but there is one document, the application for a Hotel Liquor Licence included here as well.  Further down is some examples of newspaper wrappers too. If we come across any others of interest we will add them to this post.

1900 1d red used on Receipt 23/10/1900, simple fiscal usage example

This is a very ornate 1896 Union Bank of Australia Ltd. - Second of Exchange document issued at Christchurch, bearing 4d 2nd Sideface & 2/- Longtype fiscal. It is a good example showing revenue usage of stamps, (stamp duty has been paid.) The exchange document is for 1,212 pound which was a lot of money in 1896.

1908  Superb Advertising Newspaper Wrapper 23/6/1908, sent 1d Universal Auckland, William H Hazard Gun Catalogue, long design, illustrated wrapper, 1 fold to cover size for Exhibition, needs press 1 end, just amazing advertising for 1908

A 1894 full Newspaper Wrapper with  ½d Rose, used Wellington to Pahiatua. The date stamp shows it was sent on 8/3/1894 but the large "Unclaimed" cachet tell us it was never claimed by Mr G Goldie.

A complete 1899 ½d Rose Newspaper Wrapper, used Dunedin to Waimate. It was used on a privately printed Dunedin Stock Exchange Monthly Share Report, and sent to The Chemist at Waimate. Another good example of usage of this stamp.

In the warning printed on each wrapper it say letters must not be included. "It the rule be infringed letter rate will be charged." On this 1899 ½d Rose Newspaper Wrapper that appears to have happened with the wrapper being uprated with a ½d Purple 2nd Side-Face stamp. The wrapper was used Oamaru to Christchurch, being changed a 1d rate, which makes a nice example of usage.

  1. Would it be possible for you to tell us or better still provide links to the posts where these examples were used?
I would like to read more about the stamps that appeared on these documents.
