One of the features of this blog are the large number of stamps considered to be Errors, Flaws or Varieties. We have decided to create a page in our index to list these so readers can find them. They will be listed in chronological order with a brief description and link to their location. When Allan suggested the idea to me I went searching for what each of the items listed in the heading were. There seems to be a lot of confusion among stamp collectors. 2001 - Aircraft.

Over the years there have been many stamps depicting aircraft going right back the earliest airmail stamps in the 1930s. Collecting New Zealand stamps showing aircraft would make a very large and interesting thematic collection. Maybe one day we might do more with this idea in this blog. Aircraft have played an important, though sometimes unnoticed, role in the life of New Zealanders. Both within our own boundaries and in our connection with the rest of the world, they have made significant contributions to defence, agriculture, transportation, industry and in bringing people together. This issue gave due recognition to the aircraft that have shaped our aviation history and affected the way we live. Great pictures of aircraft that made a big difference in New Zealand.

Great Barrier Pigeon Post.

Great Barrier Island is the largest island in the Hauraki Gulf, laying only 65 miles (105Km) from Auckland City. The island can be seen from Auckland on a clear day, it is that close, but back in the 1800s, it was isolated with no communication other than by sea with an irregular ship service. When in 1894, the Northern Steamship Company's ship SS Wairarapa hit the northern end of the island with the loss of 121 lives, the news took several days to reach Auckland. It highlighted the need for better communication between the island and the mainland. See our post Wreck of the Wairarapa.
